VALENCIA, Spain — Greece's first-ever Under-23 National Baseball Team completed its historic debut at the 2026 European U23 Baseball Championship Qualifier in Valencia, Spain, finishing with a 2-2 record and providing an encouraging look at the next generation of Greek baseball.
Competing internationally for the first time at the U23 level, Greece faced experienced European opposition and quickly showed it belonged. The young Greek squad battled Switzerland and host Spain in two tightly contested games before responding with consecutive victories over Croatia and Turkey to close the tournament.
The final 2-2 record only tells part of the story.
Greece's two losses came by a combined three runs, including an extra-inning thriller against Spain in which Greece came within three outs of advancing to the semifinals. Offensively, Markos Lagios delivered an outstanding tournament, while the Greek pitching staff finished among the qualifier's leaders in several major categories.
For a program making its first appearance at this age level, Valencia represented a promising beginning.

The national team scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning, putting Greece within three outs of advancing to the semifinal in its first-ever U23 tournament.
Spain, however, mounted one final rally.
The hosts scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning to escape with a 14-13 walk-off victory, bringing Greece's semifinal hopes to a heartbreaking end.
Constantine Coines homered for Greece, while Markos Lagios collected three hits, including a double. Lagios and Nicolas Sullo each drove in three runs as the Greek offense continued to answer Spain throughout the afternoon.
For a team competing together at the U23 level for the first time, Greece had come within three outs of reaching the semifinals.
The result was difficult, but the performance demonstrated just how small the margin could be between Greece and some of Europe's more established baseball programs.
Eliminated from semifinal contention after two narrow defeats, Greece had every opportunity to allow the disappointment of the Spain loss to define its tournament.
Instead, the team responded.
Facing Croatia in its next game, Greece took an early lead and faced one late deficit on its way to a 9-6 victory, securing the first win in the history of the country's U23 National Team.
Akili Carris homered, Nicholas Kreatsoulas collected two doubles and Tommy Stathopoulos delivered three scoreless innings while striking out four to help secure the historic victory.
Greece then returned to the field for its tournament finale against Turkey with an opportunity to leave Valencia with an even record.
The Greek National Team did exactly that.
Greece defeated Turkey to secure its second consecutive victory and complete its inaugural U23 international competition with a 2-2 record.
After beginning the tournament with losses by two runs and one run, Greece responded by winning its final two games.
It was a fitting conclusion to a week that demonstrated both the competitiveness and resilience of Greece's newest national team.
At the center of Greece's offensive performance was Markos Lagios, who emerged as the team's offensive MVP during the four-game tournament.
Lagios put together an exceptional week at the plate, batting .818 with nine hits in just 11 at-bats.
He scored five runs, drove in five more and collected 10 total bases, finishing the tournament with a .733 on-base percentage, .909 slugging percentage and 1.642 OPS.
Lagios also struck out zero times during the tournament.
His performance led a Greek lineup that received contributions throughout the order.
Akili Carris batted .400 with a home run, double and .500 on-base percentage. John Spivey reached base at a .647 clip, scored seven runs and stole three bases, while Nicholas Kreatsoulas recorded three doubles and a home run.
Coines also homered and scored seven runs, while Sullo drove in six runs in three games.
The offensive depth was perhaps best displayed against Spain, when Greece scored 13 runs and continued answering the hosts throughout one of the tournament's most dramatic games.
While the Greek offense produced several impressive individual performances, one of the most encouraging developments in Valencia came on the mound.
Greece finished the tournament with a 3.91 team ERA, 30 strikeouts and a .178 opponent batting average — ranking first in the qualifier in all three categories.
Greece was also the only pitching staff in the tournament that did not surrender a home run.
For a newly assembled U23 staff facing international competition for the first time, those numbers provided a significant indication of the talent within the group.
There was also an obvious area for improvement.
Greece issued 35 walks, the most in the tournament, creating additional traffic on the bases and forcing the pitching staff to repeatedly work out of difficult situations.
Yet even with those free passes, opposing hitters struggled to produce consistent damage against Greek pitching.
The combination of a tournament-leading opponent batting average, 30 strikeouts and no home runs allowed showed what the staff was capable of when it attacked the strike zone.
Improved command will be an important focus moving forward. If Greece can reduce its walks while maintaining the swing-and-miss ability and quality of contact displayed in Valencia, the pitching staff has the potential to become a significant strength for this group.
For Greece, the significance of Valencia extends well beyond a 2-2 record.
The country's first U23 National Team arrived without any previous history at the age level and immediately demonstrated that it could compete internationally.

Valencia was the first opportunity for this group.
There were areas to improve. There were opportunities narrowly missed. But there was also tangible evidence of what this generation of Greek baseball players is capable of becoming.
Greece finished its first U23 European campaign 2-2, won its final two games, came within three outs of a semifinal appearance, produced an outstanding individual offensive performance and fielded one of the tournament's most effective pitching staffs.
For an inaugural tournament, that represents more than a promising start.
It represents the beginning of a new generation of Greek baseball.
