The road to the 2027 European Baseball Championship is officially set.
Greece has been drawn into Group A alongside Czechia, host nation Germany and Sweden for the 2027 European Baseball Championship in Regensburg and Munich, Germany.
The 16-team championship will feature four groups of four, bringing together Europe's top national teams for one of the most important tournaments in recent Greek baseball history.

For Greece, the draw presents three familiar opponents and another opportunity for a national team that has spent the past three European Championships coming increasingly close to breaking through the opening round.
There will be plenty of familiarity when Greece arrives in Germany.
Czechia, Germany and Sweden were all drawn into the same opening-round group at the 2025 European Championship, meaning the three nations will meet again in 2027 with Greece joining the group.
Historically, Greece has played the three countries a combined 12 times at the senior level, holding a 3–9 record against its 2027 group opponents.
The history, however, varies considerably from opponent to opponent.
Czechia represents the most accomplished recent opponent in Group A after capturing the bronze medal at the 2025 European Championship.
Greece and Czechia have met four times at the senior level, with the Czechs holding a 4–0 advantage in the all-time series.
The first meeting came at the 2005 European Championship, when Czechia defeated Greece 14–0. Their most recent meeting came 18 years later during the opening round of the 2023 European Championship in front of a sold out Ostrava crowd, again resulting in a 14–0 Czech victory.
The 2027 meeting will give Greece another opportunity against a Czech program that has established itself among Europe's leading baseball nations.
The matchup with host nation Germany brings a very different history.
Despite both countries having competed regularly on the European stage, Greece and Germany have played only twice, splitting those meetings 1–1.
Their first matchup came during Greece's historic 2003 European Championship, when Hellas defeated Germany 11–0 on its way to winning the silver medal and qualifying for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
The teams met again seven years later at the 2010 European Championship, with Germany winning 17–8.
That tournament also holds a special place in Greek baseball history. Greece finished fourth in Europe in 2010, the country's best European Championship finish since its silver medal in 2003.
The two national teams have not met since.
Seventeen years later, Greece will return to Germany for the European Championship and once again face the host nation.
Of Greece's three Group A opponents, Sweden is the most familiar.
Greece and Sweden have met six times, with Sweden holding a 4–2 advantage in the all-time series.
Their history stretches back to 2005, and the two countries have crossed paths across multiple generations of Greek baseball. Sweden was also an opponent during Greece's fourth-place run at the 2010 European Championship.
The most recent meeting came at the 2021 European Championship, when Sweden defeated Greece 10–0.
The 2027 matchup will mark the seventh senior meeting between the two countries and another chapter in a series that now spans more than two decades.
The stakes surrounding the 2027 tournament will extend well beyond the European Championship standings.
The championship will play a role in the qualification pathway for baseball's return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028.
Under the LA28 qualification system, the two highest-finishing European teams that have not already qualified for the Olympic Games will earn places in the six-team Final Qualification Event.
That tournament will include two European teams, two Asian teams, one African team and one Oceania team, with the winner claiming the final available berth in the six-team Olympic baseball tournament.
For Greece, that adds another level of significance to an already important European Championship. A deep run in Germany would not only represent a breakthrough within Europe, but could potentially keep alive a path toward returning Greek baseball to the Olympic stage.
Before Greece can think about how deep it can go in the tournament, the first challenge will be navigating Group A.
That has been a frustratingly close hurdle for Hellas in each of the past three European Championships.
After working its way back through the European qualification system, Greece returned to the European Championship in 2021. Since then, the national team has established itself as a consistent member of Europe's top 16, qualifying for four consecutive championships from 2021 through 2027.
But Greece has repeatedly come within inches of taking the next step.
At the 2021 European Championship, Greece entered its final group game against Belgium with a place in the knockout stage on the line. Hellas carried a lead into the bottom of the ninth inning and came within one out of advancing before Belgium rallied for a walk-off victory.
Two years later, the situation was remarkably similar.
At the 2023 European Championship, Greece once again met Belgium with advancement at stake. The teams entered the ninth inning tied 4–4 before Belgium broke the tie with a solo home run and held on for a 5–4 victory.
Despite the heartbreaking finish, Greece ended the tournament 3–3, marking its first .500-or-better record at a European Championship since 2012.
Then came another opportunity in 2025.
Greece fell behind Switzerland 7–1 in a crucial group-stage matchup before mounting a six-run comeback to tie the game 7–7 in the seventh inning. Switzerland eventually pulled away for a 12–8 victory.
Even after that loss, Greece still had a path forward against European powerhouse Italy. Hellas jumped out to an early 4–0 lead before Italy responded and eventually won 9–4.
Three consecutive European Championships have therefore ended with Greece still having a realistic opportunity to advance late in the opening round.
In 2027, Hellas will try again.
Greece's presence in Germany also represents how far the national-team program has come over the past decade.
Following a 1–6 showing at the 2016 European Championship, Greece was relegated from Europe's top level. Another difficult tournament in 2017 sent the program further down the European structure.
The climb back began almost immediately.
Greece finished second in its 2018 qualifier to earn promotion, followed with a 3–2 performance in 2019 and then won its 2021 qualifier in Lithuania to return to the European Championship.
Since returning, Greece has stayed there.
Hellas competed at the European Championships in 2021, 2023 and 2025, and qualification for 2027 means Greece will now appear among Europe's top 16 for the fourth consecutive championship.
The program has continued expanding along the way. Greece went undefeated to win Prague Baseball Week in 2024, while 2026 saw the creation of the country's first U23 National Team, providing another level of international competition and development for the next generation of Greek players.
The objective at the senior level, however, remains clear.
After three consecutive tournaments spent knocking on the door, Greece will head to Germany looking to finally push through it.
There will be no shortage of challenges.
Czechia arrives as a 2025 European bronze medalist. Germany will have the advantage of playing a European Championship on home soil. Sweden brings an experienced national-team program and a winning historical record against Greece.
But the recent history of Greek baseball has increasingly been defined by competing for advancement rather than simply qualifying for the tournament.
In 2021, it came down to one out.
In 2023, it came down to the ninth inning.
In 2025, Greece erased a six-run deficit against Switzerland and later held a four-run lead against Italy with its tournament still alive.
Now comes another opportunity.
The opponents are known.
Czechia. Germany. Sweden. Greece.
For Hellas, Group A will determine whether years of near misses can finally become a breakthrough — and with the road toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games running through the 2027 European Championship, there will be even more at stake when Greece takes the field in Germany.
